A NGO dedicated to bringing academic theory to regulatory practice.

Carbon Balance was born out of the University of Oxford, sparked by a conversation between co-founders Ingrid Sundvor and Mirte Boot, with support from the Oxford Net Zero team and Professor Myles Allen. In 2022, we saw the need to move beyond academic discussions and bring policies like the Carbon Takeback Obligation (CTBO) into real-world regulation. With early backing from key supporters, we launched an initiative to engage policymakers, NGOs and industry leaders in integrating producer responsibility and geological net zero into climate policy. As we grow, we remain committed to creative, high-impact advocacy that turns cutting-edge research into tangible climate policy and regulation. We are funded by private philanthrophy and research grants.

At Carbon Balance, we collaborate. Our team brings together diverse experiences and skillsets.

We work on net zero research, policy research and policy development. We collaborate with diverse advisors, ecosystem partners and policymakers on research, thought-leadership, public events, workshops, media, policy advocacy and development.
