Carbon Pricing Mechanisms for the Western Balkans: Invite-only event
In this high-level, invite-only roundtable, Carbon Balance Initiative and Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment brought together regional leaders to explore the future of carbon pricing in the Western Balkans. As the region prepares to respond to the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the event evaluated four policy options proposed by the European Commission and assessed how each could align with national development strategies and net zero goals.
The event was hosted in Skopje on 17 June 2025, introducing an ‘Analysis Framework’ developed by the University of Oxford and Carbon Balance Initiative to guide regional decision-making. Key objectives included:
Stimulate informed policy dialogue on carbon pricing pathways.
Gather feedback on the proposed analysis framework.
Lay the foundation for long-term regional collaboration.
