Our Key Recommendations:
1. Adopt a like-for-like approach to the Removal Growth Target
We support Option 1a, which ensures fossil CO₂ emissions are only balanced by removals that provide storage of comparable duration (1000+ years). This reflects the latest climate science and safeguards environmental integrity.
2. Close the ‘removals gap’ with interim milestones
Interim removal targets should be included as standard. These milestones will help address the projected 5–7 GtCO₂ gap between government climate plans and net-zero-aligned scenarios.
3. Make interim targets mandatory, not voluntary
We recommend that SBTi pursue Option 1 to require companies to set both near- and long-term removal targets. This will increase demand certainty, enable scaling of durable removals, and support future policy development.
We support and endorse the position statement submitted by Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and refer readers to their detailed technical response.
